All About Your Alternator

Once called a vehicle's generator, the alternator works the same way. A vehicle's alternator produces energy to keep the electrical system going and the battery charged.

To know if the alternator is malfunctioning, look at the instrument panel. If the warning like looks like a battery or says "ALT" or "GEN," there's a good chance the alternator is faulty.

How can you tell if it's the alternator or the battery when you're having car trouble? Jump start the dead vehicle and then remove the jumper cables. If the car stops running not long after, the alternator is probably the problem. If the car remains running, the battery may need a charge.
